Knitting with Luxury Yarns: Are They Worth the Investment?
Knitting with Luxury Yarns: Are They Worth the Investment?
I’ve learned a lot over the years at knit nights – things like knitting stripes without that little jump and choosing the best colours for a project, and something that has been universal in every knitting group I’ve ever been in, is people tend to either be frugal or spendy when it comes to yarn. I’ve been both and I think I’ve settled somewhere in between, but man I love some fancy yarn.
So let’s dive into the world of luxury yarns. You know, those skeins you pick up and immediately want to squish against your face? But then you see the price tag and wonder if theyโre really worth it. Letโs chat about it!

Mid-Range Luxuries: Merino Wool
Debbie Bliss Cashmerino & Malabrigo Ultimate Sock
First up, letโs talk about merino wool. If you havenโt knit with merino yet, youโre in for a treat. Itโs like knitting with a cloudโsoft, stretchy, and oh-so-squishable. Debbie Bliss Cashmerino is one of my go-tos in this category. Itโs a blend of merino, cashmere, and microfiber, which makes it both soft and durable. Plus, it’s machine washable, so no worries about hand-washing your beautiful creations (because, honestly, who has time for that?).
Now, if youโre into vibrant, hand-dyed yarns, youโve got to try Malabrigo Ultimate Sock. This 100% merino wool yarn is perfect for those projects where you want the colors to pop. Whether youโre knitting socks, shawls, or a lightweight sweater, this yarn has you covered with its warmth and softness.
Affordable Luxury: Linen Yarns
Berroco Remix
Letโs shift gears to linen. If you havenโt given linen a try, you might be thinking, “Isnโt that the stuff they make stiff shirts out of?” But trust me, linen yarn is a different beast. Berroco Remix is a fantastic option here. Itโs a blend of recycled fibers, including linen, silk, and cotton, so youโre getting all the durability and breathability of linen with a softer touch. The best part? Remix is eco-friendly and perfect for those lightweight, breezy projects youโll love to wear in warmer weather.
High-End Luxury: Rowan Yarns
Rowan Pure Cashmere, Felted Tweed, & Kidsilk Haze
Now, letโs talk about Rowan, the granddaddy of luxury yarns. If youโre looking to splurge, Rowanโs Pure Cashmere is where itโs at. This yarn is pure indulgenceโthink buttery soft, warm, and just plain luscious. Perfect for those special projects youโll pass down to future generations (or, you know, just spoil yourself with).
If youโre into a more rustic vibe, Rowan Felted Tweed is a beautiful blend of wool, alpaca, and viscose that knits up into something cozy and textured. Itโs fantastic for colorwork or anything where you want that classic, slightly tweedy look. This would be a really fun yarn for our Personal Space Invader Bundle.
And then thereโs Kidsilk Haze, a dreamy blend of silk and mohair. This yarn is like knitting with a cloud of mistโitโs light, airy, and adds a lovely halo to your projects. Whether youโre working on a delicate lace shawl or just want to add some softness to another yarn, Kidsilk Haze is pure magic.
So, Are They Worth It?
So, are these luxury yarns worth your hard-earned cash? In my opinion, absolutely. Sure, theyโre an investment, but they make your knitting experienceโand your finished projectsโjust that much more special. Whether youโre going for the soft squish of merino, the eco-friendly vibe of linen, or the pure indulgence of cashmere, luxury yarns have a way of taking your knitting to the next level.
And hereโs a fun bonus tip: If youโve got some leftovers from your luxury yarn projects, why not knit a matching sweater for your dog? Itโs a cute way to use up those extra yards and get some extra mileage out of your yarn. Plus, who wouldnโt love a matching set for you and your furry friend? So go ahead, treat yourself! You (and your needles) deserve it.
